Driving Distances & Times

Mount Batur sits in the far north-eastern highlands of Bali. Driving times vary significantly depending on the time of day and coastal traffic.

📍

From Ubud

Distance: 40 km (25 miles)

Takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours of driving. Early morning departures for sunrise trekking face minimal traffic, making the drive smooth.

🏄‍♀️

From Canggu

Distance: 65 km (40 miles)

Takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Requires a pre-dawn wake-up call around 1:30 AM to arrive at the mountain starting base by 3:45 AM.

🍹

From Seminyak / Kuta

Distance: 70 km (43 miles)

Takes 2 to 2.5 hours. The roads winding up from the south are narrow but generally paved and well-signposted.

🧗‍♂️

From Uluwatu / Nusa Dua

Distance: 82 km (51 miles)

Takes 2.5 to 3 hours. The longest corridor, requiring a highly early start. A private driver is strongly recommended for safety.

Transport Modes

How to Reach the Trailheads

Review the exact benefits and logistical details of Grab, Gojek, private drivers, and scooter rentals in rural Bali.

🚗 1. Private Car & Driver (Highly Vetted)

Hiring a private car with a dedicated driver is the most comfortable and reliable way to travel. It provides seamless door-to-door transit, removing the stress of navigating dark mountain roads in the middle of the night.

  • Typical Cost: IDR 600,000 to IDR 800,000 (~$40 to $53 USD) for a full-day (10-hour) rental, including fuel and driver.
  • Inclusions: Most sunrise trekking tour packages include this round-trip transfer directly in the booking fee.

📱 2. Ride-Hailing Apps (Grab & Gojek)

Grab and Gojek are widely used in Bali's southern beach cities and central Ubud, providing transparent, cheap pricing compared to traditional taxis. However, they are **extremely restricted** in rural Kintamani.

  • Drop-Offs: You can easily book an app-based taxi to drop you off at the Toya Bungkah starting point from Ubud.
  • Pick-Up Ban: Local village taxi cooperatives strictly forbid app-based drivers from picking up passengers inside the Kintamani caldera. Finding an app driver at 8:00 AM after your hike is practically impossible, leaving you stranded.

🚌 3. Public Shuttles & Buses (Unavailable)

While public transport services like the green Kura-Kura Bus and the government-subsidized Teman Bus connect major coastal towns, they are **unsuitable** for sunrise trekkers.

  • No Night Service: Shuttles only run during daytime hours. There are absolutely no public buses operating between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM.
  • Recommendation: Do not rely on public transport schedules. Book a private tour or shuttle package through local agencies.

🛵 4. Scooter Rental (Self-Drive)

Renting a scooter is a cheap, flexible alternative popular with solo backpackers. It costs around IDR 80,000 to IDR 150,000 (~$5 to $10 USD) per day, but contains high safety risks.

  • Safety Hazard: Navigating narrow, steep mountain curves at 2:00 AM in pitch darkness alongside massive gravel trucks is highly hazardous.
  • Surprise Cold: The mountain wind is freezing on a scooter. You must wear warm gloves, windproof pants, and a thick jacket.

Regional Entry Costs

Kintamani Caldera Entrance Fees

When entering the Kintamani region via the main mountain roads, you will pass through official government toll checkpoints. Every visitor is required to pay a regional entry permit fee to the local Bangli Regency government.

The standard fee for international tourists is **IDR 50,000 per person** (approx. **$3.30 USD**), while domestic Indonesian visitors pay **IDR 30,000**. If you are driving a private car, there is a vehicle tax of **IDR 10,000** (~**$0.66 USD**), and scooters pay **IDR 5,000**.

Ensure you carry physical Indonesian Rupiah cash, as the checkpoint booths do not accept credit cards or international bank transfers. If you book an all-inclusive sunrise trekking tour, the driver handles these toll gate payments automatically, which saves you the hassle of stopping at the checkpoints.
